Die Tonröhren dienen als Schutz- und Rückzugsmöglichkeit für Welse, Garnelen und Krebse. 
 Die offene Tonröhre ist ca. 5 cm lang und hat eine Eingangsöffnung von ca. 2 cm. Die Höhlen sind auch ideal für Bepflanzungen von Moos.
 Da die Oberfläche recht porös ist, wächst das Moos sehr schnell und leicht an.
