What is citicoline and what are its properties?
Citicoline (cytidyl-5'-diphosphocholine), also known as CDP choline , is an endogenous compound produced by the body. It occurs naturally in nervous tissue, where it has neuroprotective functions. Citicoline is also a precursor for phosphatidylcholine - the basic building block of phospholipids in cell membranes, as well as for one of the body's most important neurotransmitters - acetylcholine. For this reason, CDP choline is an important element of a properly functioning nervous system . Citicoline is also a source of bioavailable cytidine , which is then transformed into uridine and in this form works synergistically with choline .
