The Cigar 2018 is a lovely, fresh Coonawarra Cabernet. Vibrant, deep magenta in colour. The aromatics are rich with blue & black fruits, notes of spices and warm, comforting aromas of cedar, strawberry compote and sandalwood. The palate is expressive with blackcurrant, plum and clove spice, melding with dark chocolate and ripe fruits. The wine has a beautiful structre with fine tannins and balanced acidity ensuring longevity.
Grown in the Menzies Vineyard, Yalumba's premium Cabernet Sauvignon estate. This was established in the world-famous region of Coonawarra in 1975. The terrior is defined by red brown earth over limestone, perfect for growing grapes for full bodied, structured red wine.
Above average winter and spring rainfall replenished soil moisture and aquifers. Winter was cold giving the vines plenty of rest during dormancy, while spring and early summer were quite warm. Cold ocean currents from the Bonney upwelling provided a cooling influence on March temperatures, extending slow, cool ripening to deliver them grapes with fine tannins, natural acidity and strong varietal flavours.
Matured for 19 months in new French oak barriques and hogsheads (20%), one year old French oak barriques and hogsheads (10%) with the rest in older French oak.
The Cigar is a name coined by Coonawarra Vignerons to describe the region's unique cigar-shaped strip of rich red terra rossa soil. Home to some of Australia's most famous vineyards, the secret of Coonawarra lies in the intimate bond between the terra rossa soil, limestone layers, pure artisan water and a long, cool ripening season. Fortunate to be part of this iconic place, Yalumba salutes the region's pioneers and those privileged to inherit its future.
