An extraordinary French Art Nouveau necklace dating from the turn of the twentieth century, formed as a winged serpent suspended from an elaborate silver paste necklet. Set throughout with sparkling white paste stones, accented with green and ruby-red paste and centred by faux pearls, it is a remarkable survivor from one of the most imaginative periods in jewellery history.

At the heart of the necklace hangs a fantastical winged serpent, a motif rarely encountered even among Art Nouveau jewels. During the Belle Époque, artists and jewellers drew inspiration from mythology, dreams, folklore and the natural world, creating jewels that blurred the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Rather than simply imitating flowers or animals, they transformed them into mysterious, otherworldly forms filled with symbolism and movement.

Paris stood at the centre of the Art Nouveau movement. Designers such as René Lalique revolutionised jewellery by placing artistic design above intrinsic material value. Silver, horn, enamel, glass and paste were embraced alongside precious gemstones, allowing jewellers to create dramatic and highly original works of art.
