Winemaker Charles Boigelot is the fourth generation of his family to champion the terroir treasures of the Cote de Beaune crafting silky, expressive wines that deliver serious pleasure right out of the gate. Charles honed his skills at both Domaine Paul Pillot and neighboring Coche-Dury, following in the footsteps of his father, who did the same (and a good portion of the family’s grapes for years were sold to this historic Meursault estate).  Volnay, being my favorite village of the Cote de Beaune for red wines, I was surprised that I had never had a wine from the sneaky good vineyard of Ez Blanches - especially since it sits in a position I really favor. The vineyard Ez Blanches sits high on the slope, between forest and the top premier cru vineyard, ‘Clos des Chênes.’ Soils are truly “blanches” or white, with thin topsoil on solid limestone, and produce a structured, mineral-driven Pinot Noir with tangy red fruits and fresh herbs.  This wine is already incredibly perfumed with aromas of violets, earth and plummy fruit.  The super-silky palate is expressive of both red fruit and a strong limestone mineral gout de terroir. Already delicious, it will only improve and gain in complexity over the next decade.  With  Red Burgundy prices being what they are, this represents a really good value too. Limited.
