A favorite among environmentalists, jute has a negligible carbon footprint. It is also biodegradable and 100% compostable. The fibers are first extracted by a process called retting wherein jute stems are bundled together and immersed in low, running water. After which, in a process called stripping, the non-fibrous matter is scraped off, while the fibers found inside the jute stem are retained for hand braiding by talented women artisans from India.

The textile is a result of skilful hand-weaving, a strenuous process that requires perfect rhythm and coordination. The craft has stayed true to its roots even in the face of severe competition from power looms and employs more than 4.4 million weaver families!
