Whiskey Kinahan’s Single Malt Heritage is een van de nieuwere releases van het merk en is een soepele, levendige en complexe Single Malt Whiskey. Gemaakt van 100% gemoute gerst en geproduceerd in kleine batches van maximaal 30 met de hand geselecteerde Amerikaanse Bourbon-vaten.

Deze glanzende gouden whiskey heeft veel te bieden in de neus en smaak. Aroma's van bloedsinaasappel, karamel, hazelnoot, tabak en cacao zijn erg levendig. De smaak is erg diep met tonen van pure chocolade, peer, perzik en eucalyptus. Subtiele smaken van eikenhout zijn terug te vinden in de afdronk, samen met wat zoetigheid van bloedsinaasappel.

De indrukwekkende geschiedenis van Kinahan & Co begon toen het in 1779 werd opgericht door Daniel Kinahan, aan Trinity Street in Dublin, Ierland. Het werden pioniers in de whiskey wereld, aangezien men denkt dat ze de eersten waren die begonnen te rijpen op houten vaten. In het begin van de 19e eeuw werd het merk populairder, dit was ook te danken aan het feit dat ze het ‘L.L.’ handelsmerk kregen. Het merk kon alleen worden uitgegeven door Lord Luitenant of Ireland, het staatshoofd. Charles Lennox, destijds Lord Luitenant, was zo onder de indruk van de whisky dat hij opdracht gaf om alle voorraden exclusief voor hem af te nemen. Vanwege de groeiende populariteit van de whiskey begon het merk in 1841 met exporteren naar Londen, dat een toegangspoort was naar Europa, China, India en Australië.

Deze enorme uitbreiding van het merk bleef ook niet onopgemerkt in hogere rangen, waarbij koningin Victoria een ‘’Royal Warrant’’ uitreikte aan het Ierse whiskey merk. Helaas nam de populariteit van Ierse Whiskey in de jaren 1900 enorm af, dit in combinatie met het verbod op alcohol in de VS en een aanstaande Ierse burgeroorlog, betekende dat het merk in oktober 1988 besloot een lange pauze in te lassen, totdat betere tijden aanbraken. Op 14 maart 2014 heropende het bedrijf, met als doel de historische naam nieuw leven in te blazen door middel van een reeks originele bottelingen.

Above The River: The Complete Poems of james Wright
Format: Paperback
This volume is fascinating, because it does show the different stages of Wright's development as a poet and a writer (the prose sketches and descriptions of Italy are wonderful). The early poems are extremely capable but there is a sense in which they feel constrained by formal verse conventions, especially rhyme. This becomes evident when he writes in free verse and his voice becomes easier and more vernacular. Some of the poems like "Hook" and "To A Blossoming Pear Tree" are wonderful: 'An old man / Appeared to me once / In the unendurable snow./ He had singe of white beard on his face. / He paused on a strett on Minneapolis / And stroked my face. // Give it to me, he begged / I'll pay you anything. // I flinched. Both terrified, / We slunk away, / Each in his own way dodging / The cruel darts of the cold. " There are some late poems when he becomes almost incoherent, but the centre of the book is a whole series of poems as powerful and honest as this.

Format: Paperback
James Wright is a terrific, though not well known, American poet of the 1950's and 60's. Along with Robert Bly and William Duffey, Wright helped to open a new page in modern poetry which encouraged writers to break from the restrictions of traditional British formats. Personal and reflective, the poems focus on nature and have a strong touch of influence from ancient Chinese poets. Though the collection is filled with great stuff, my favorite is "Northern Pike."
