[CHATTERTON, Thomas.] Poems, supposed to have been written at Bristol, by Thomas Rowley, and others, in the fifteenth century; the greatest part now first published from the most authentic copies, with an engraved specimen of one of the MSS. To which are added, a preface, an introductory account of the several pieces, and a glossary. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son, at the Mews-Gate. 1777.

8vo. Modern half calf over marbled boards, flat spine ruled in compartments with blue morocco lettering pieces, all edges speckled red; pp. xxvii, [1 (blank)], 307, [1 (blank)], with engraved plate after the “original manuscript”; a very handsome copy with a gentle patina and slight, even fading to the spine, internally very fresh with very light toning, endpapers slightly protruding from the text block; occasional pencil annotations.

First edition, with the second state of c4 (as usual), a cancel omitting the phrase “and were probably composed by him”.

Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770) was an extraordinary literary prodigy, political writer, and forger who, despite his tragically short life, achieved great notoriety and exerted a lasting influence on the Romantic poets and artists. By the age of eleven he was already contributing to the Bristol Journal under the editorship of Felix Farley. He applied himself so assiduously to his studies that he soon began producing mature work which he claimed to be the recently discovered writings of an imaginary fifteenth-century monk and poet, Thomas Rowley. Chatterton soon attracted the attention of antiquaries such as William Barrett, to whom he supplied transcripts of Rowley’s works for scholarly investigation. In 1769 he sent examples of Rowley’s poetry to Horace Walpole, who initially offered to publish them if they proved authentic, but withdrew his support upon discovering that Chatterton was only sixteen, his suspicions thereby aroused.

Turning increasingly to political writing, his final months were marked by a prodigious outpouring of eclogues, lyrics, operas, and satires in both prose and verse, yet brought him little financial reward. Destitute, he apparently took his own life by arsenic poisoning in his garret in Brook Street at the age of just seventeen years and nine months (as famously depicted in Henry Wallis’s The Death of Chatterton). By the time this posthumous collection of the Rowley poems appeared, the literary world had largely reached a consensus that the works were forgeries. The editor, Thomas Tyrwhitt (1730-1786), “sensationally recanted his faith in [the poems]” shortly after publication (ODNB).

Offer lots of support and traction- perfect gym shoes
So comfortable- they offer a lot of support and I can tell they will last for a long time (and I’m hard on my gym shoes!). I’m actually a female but I sized down and they fit perfectly. I found them on sale and definitely recommend them as they are well worth the price.

Comfortable nike running shoes.
Size: 13, Color: Black/Summit White/Anthracite/Cyber, Size: 13, Color: Black/Summit White/Anthracite/Cyber
Nice and comfortable from the moment that I put them on my feet. Feels like you’re walking on memory foam. You have to buy comfortable shoes when you’re on your feet all day. I do Amazon Flex in. These will be perfect although I have several pairs so that way, the shoe lasts longer. Definitely would buy these in different colors very satisfied.

Good shoe, seems physically big
I really like these shoes. I’ve been able to wear them for about a week now and am really impressed with how they’re holding up. A lot of my shoes start to squeak in a similar amount of time and these still feel like they just came out of the box. I especially like the heal support, it feels like it’s really gripping the heal nicely My one complaint is that they seem physically larger than most size 11 shoes from Nike I buy. In spite of fitting the same inside, the actual shoe seems about an inch longer than my other Nike size 11s. It’s not a deal breaker and it doesn’t impact the comfort, it might even make them more comfortable, but they look a bit large on my foot. And if you have a narrow foot, you might be swimming in these.

Can’t Miss Shoe
Size: 11, Color: White/Blue Crystal/Total Orange, Size: 11, Color: White/Blue Crystal/Total Orange
Great looking shoe! Fit to form, I wear a size 101/2 or 11 and I ordered a size 11 and they fit perfectly. Soft and comfortable perfect for walking as I suffer from knee and back pain at 59 years old…. Don’t judge me. Normal width size for me so not sure about the wide fit but the toe room for me is comfortable. Great choice will definitely recommend.

Yes Go Nike!
These Nike men's shoes are very comfortable. It's a pretty versatile shoe. I am able to work out in the gym, go for hikes, walk on the street and run errands all with ease and comfortability. They are sturdy, have good cushion and great support for your joints and back keeping you aligned. They lean on the more narrow side for fit so if you have wide feet they may not work for you. The green around the heal is attractive. The price I paid for the shoes was extremely reasonable making them a great value. I have been using them for a couple of months now and they are still in great shape. Excellent buy!
