Are there elements of your writing style that you want to improve but you’re not sure how? Fiction editor Joseph Hall is here to help. Writing is a complicated craft. Between mastery of viewpoint, tense, perspective, grammar, dialogue, description, and sensory detail…it can be difficult to keep up with everything and make sure your words are delivered as intended. Maybe you feel your prose isn’t emotional enough, or too descriptive for its own good.

Joseph wants to help you refine your style. There is no one true way to write well, and the beauty of written language is that everyone writes and interprets words differently. By reviewing up to 50 sample pages to get a feel for your own personal style, strengths, and weaknesses, Joseph wants to help you discover the best writing style for you so that your ideas come to life exactly as you want them to.

What you will learn:

Consultations must be booked at least seven days in advance in order for pages to be reviewed.

After booking a consultation, you will receive an email from Joseph with directions to send your pages. Attach your document to the email in ONE of the following formats. Hard copy documents cannot be accepted. Please include your name and email address within this attached document.
  1. Word document (.doc or .docx)
  2. Rich Text File (.rtf)
All pages submitted for review must adhere to the following professional manuscript guidelines:
  1. 8.5 x 11 page size
  2. Double-spacing throughout
  3. 1-inch margins on the top and bottom and 1.25-inch margins on the left and right sides
  4. Arial, Courier, or Times font
  5. 12-point font size
  6. No more than 50 pages total

Joseph Hall

Joseph Hall graduated from Point Park University in Pittsburgh with a B.A. in Broadcast Communications. Since that time, he has worked non-stop in the field of editing and publication.

In 2017, Joseph became an editor for the Algonkian Author Salon. Months later, he joined the team at Del Sol Press where he works as a Developmental Editor, and also helps market novels.

Today, Joseph still works for Del Sol Press and Algonkian, but has also networked further. He works with several literary agents and small publishers, and is also a developmental editor for the Writer’s Digest Second Draft program. He started J.H. Editing as a way for him to work in the genres he truly excels at, and also provide a more personable connection with his clients.

You can find Joseph in-person while he’s traveling to speak at writer’s conferences across the country. He’s always willing and eager to meet with up-and-coming authors to help them forge their own personal path toward their writing goals.

Format: Paperback
In this seminal book, Fisher expounds his "narrative paradigm," a sweeping theory of human communication and more. Professor Emeritus at USC's Annenberg School of Communication, Fisher's discipline was rhetoric. But the book's subtitle -- "Toward a Philosophy of Reason, Value, and Action" -- isn't a stretch. Fisher's theory is a grand project extending its purview way beyond the communication department's door. At root is Fisher's rejection of what he calls the "rational world paradigm," which falsely separates logos from mythos, reason from imagination, fact from value. Doesn't work that way, Fisher says. No such thing as a value-free belief, assertion, or action. Instead, we evaluate according to a "logic of good reasons" -- reasons we value as good -- rooted in the narratives of our experience. An under-appreciated aspect of Fisher's work is the application of his theory to American politics. America's most enduring narrative is The American Dream. But that dream comprises two sub-narrative strands: the "materialistic myth" and the "moralistic myth." These two strands broadly represent conservative and progressive impulses respectively, but those threadbare categories don't do Fisher's explication justice. The two myths find their roots in the narratives of the earliest Americans, and have been battling it out ever since. It's a credible understanding of the history of American public moral debates.
