Pan Cubano vs Pan de Media Noche — what's the difference?
Both are Cuban breads, but they're built for different sandwiches.
- Pan Cubano (regular Cuban bread): Long, crusty, airy. Used for the classic Cuban sandwich (Cubano). Crisp shatter when bitten.
- Pan de Media Noche (this product): Shorter, softer, slightly sweet, more pillowy. Used for the Media Noche ("midnight") sandwich, which is the smaller, sweeter, late-night cousin of the Cubano.
The sweetness in Media Noche bread is what makes the contrast with savory ham, pork, mustard, and pickles work. If you're making Cubanos, get Pan Cubano. If you're making Media Noches, this is what you need.
How to build the perfect Media Noche
- Slice the loaf lengthwise
- Brush both inside surfaces lightly with yellow mustard
- Layer: thin sliced roast pork, sweet ham, Swiss cheese, dill pickles
- Close, butter the outside of the loaf
- Press on a panini press or cast-iron skillet with another heavy skillet on top, ~3–4 minutes per side
- The bread should be golden, the cheese fully melted, the inside warm through
Storage
Sealed at room temperature: 4–6 days. To preserve longer: freeze loaves whole in their original wrap up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature for 2–3 hours before slicing. Toast lightly to refresh texture after thawing.
